How to use reusable cloth pads: A complete guide for beginners
Why switch to reusable cloth pads?
If you made it here, you probably already feel that something in your menstrual routine could be better. Perhaps you are concerned about the environmental impact of disposables, or you simply want softer, more natural options for your body. You are in the right place!
Reusable cloth pads are exactly what they sound like: sanitary pads made of natural, absorbent fabrics that are washed and reused cycle after cycle. They are comfortable, economical in the long run, and much friendlier to your body and the planet.
Which pad do I need? Choose according to your flow
Before you begin, it is important to choose the right pad for your flow type:
- Light flow, daily use, or final days: Daily Liners are perfect. They are thin, discreet, and comfortable for day-to-day use or for days with lighter flow.
- Moderate flow: Moderate Pads offer the ideal absorption for the middle days of your cycle or for a regular flow.
- Heavy flow: Heavy Flow Pads are designed for your heaviest days, with extra layers of absorption so you feel secure.
💡 Kiara's Tip: If you are just starting out, we recommend having a combination of all three types to cover all the days of your cycle.
Step-by-step: How to use your cloth pad
1. Prepare your pad before the first use
Before using your new pad for the first time, wash it once (by hand or in the washing machine). This activates the natural fibers and maximizes their absorption capacity. Don't skip this step!
2. Place it in your underwear
Open the pad's wings and wrap them around the elastic of your underwear, securing them with the snap button. The absorbent side (patterned) faces up, in contact with your body. Ensure it is centered and comfortable.
3. Use with confidence
Depending on your flow, you can use the same pad for 2 to 6 hours. Listen to your body: if you feel it is already saturated, it is time to change it. Over time, you will learn exactly how long each pad lasts according to your flow.
4. Change when necessary
When changing the pad, simply unsnap the wings, remove it, and fold it over itself (with the used side inward). You can keep it in a waterproof bag until you get home to wash it.
5. Rinse before washing
When you get home, rinse the pad with cold water (never hot, as heat sets stains). You can leave it to soak in cold water until you are ready to wash. In the next section of the blog, we will tell you everything about washing and care. 👇
Frequently asked questions for beginners
Do they feel wet?
This is the most common question. The honest answer: it depends on the fabric. Our pads are made with materials that absorb flow quickly, leaving the surface relatively dry. Many clients tell us they feel more comfortable than with disposables, especially because there is no plastic in contact with their skin.
How many pads do I need?
For a full cycle, we recommend having between 8 and 12 pads, depending on the length of your period and how often you can do laundry. A good starting point is a mixed kit with liners, moderate pads, and heavy flow pads.
Are they hygienic?
Absolutely! As long as you wash them correctly after each use, they are completely hygienic. In fact, by not containing the chemicals and fragrances found in disposables, many people notice less irritation and fewer infections.
Can I use them away from home?
Yes. You just need to carry a waterproof bag to store the used pads until you can wash them. With a little practice, it becomes completely natural.
Your first step toward a more conscious period
Switching to cloth pads is a gradual process. You don't have to do it all at once. You can start by using one or two pads at home during your first few cycles, and gradually replace your disposables.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and secure in the process. Here at Kiara Liz Handmade, every pad is made with love and with the intention of accompanying you on this journey. 🌿
